Staying true to the plot of The Mikado, the famous opera by Gilbert & Sullivan, Hot Mikado offers a 1940s-style twist with reworked, jazzy tunes and modern allusions. The story begins with Nanki-Poo, the emperor's son disguised as a musician, showing up in the town of Titipu to claim his true love, Yum-Yum. To his dismay, Yum-Yum is to marry Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, that very afternoon. The only way Ko-Ko will release her and permit the young lovers to marry is if Nanki-Poo allows himself to be executed in one month's time, so that Ko-Ko's jeopardized position as Executioner will remain secure. Nanki-Poo agrees, but when Katisha, the spurned older woman determined to marry him, arrives on the scene, followed by Nanki-Poo's father, the Mikado, the plan starts unravelling and things start to get really complicated…
