About the Event
We are excited to bring this old family favourite to life again on the Carnew stage. Rehearsals are well under way under the direction of Michael Dunbar, while Graham Finnerty puts us through our paces for 'Put on your Sunday clothes', 'Before the Parade Passes by' and the Waitor's Gallop for that big number 'Hello Dolly'. We welcomed Emer Hartnett to the production team this year as our musical director and she is doing a fantastic job teaching us how to act while we sing. Carnew Musical Society is known for its warm, harmonised chorus and this show is full of great numbers with humour and wit.
What is it all about, you ask. A matchmaker named Dolly Levi (our fabulous Jennifer Byrne) takes a trip to Yonkers, New York to see the "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire," Horace Vandergelder (our dashing John Young). While there, she convinces him, his two stock clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, (Carnew's finest gents, Richard O Toole and John Donohoe) and his niece and her beau (returning to the Carnew stage, Tim Connaughton) to go to New York City. In New York, she fixes Vandergelder's clerks up with the woman Vandergelder had been courting, and her shop assistant, Mrs. Molly and Minnie Fay (we are delighted to have Ashley Murphy once again join us and the talented Louisa McCabe). Dolly has designs of her own on Mr. Vandergelder, you see.
With such a wonderful cast and talented production, along with the best sounding chorus it is a show not to be missed.
