About the Event
Hometown Girls, the original musical with country and folk songs based on Donegal’s All-Ireland triumphs in 1992 and 2012, is coming to the An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny on 25 and 26 September 2025.
Hometown Girls tells the story of three childhood friends, their lives, loves and heartbreaks and the town they were brought up in, across the span of 20 years, based on Donegal’s All-Ireland victories in 1992 and 2012.
The musical showcases the sheer joy felt by the people following Donegal’s All-Ireland wins. Not only can it lay claim to being one of the first musicals about Donegal winning the All-Ireland but it is also one of the first to feature completely original country and folk songs.
The show is full of laughter (and some tears) from the opening number, What A Day To be Alive, a raucous singalong where the people celebrate Donegal’s momentous victory in 1992, a day when they saw “old men break into tears”, a day when:
“Molloy said ‘Sam’s for the hills’,
Everybody cheered and roared,
The green and gold of Donegal,
Could no longer be ignored.”
Hometown Girls has assembled talented performers from Glenties, Ardara and surrounding areas, young and old, some of who have never acted before,. The show even features a member of the 1992 panel, Michael Gallagher,.
