In the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11th 2001, when the US airspace was closed and planes were forced to land unexpectedly, the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland suddenly found 7,000 strangers on its doorstep. 7,000 passengers who were scared, exhausted, and very far from home.

What happened next was a profound act of humanity. The people of Gander didn’t hesitate. They cooked meals, opened their homes, found beds, cared for pets, and wrapped thousands of frightened travellers in warmth and humour.
