Olive Elected To Top Position
(03/02/2014) by Colm Moules

Olive Melville, Ulster Operatic Company, takes on the role of National President of AIMS for the coming year.

At the National AGM of The Association Of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS)  held in The Canal Court Hotel, Newry, Co. Down, on Sunday January 25, 2014, Olive Melville, Ulster Operatic Company, was elected to the position of National President.

Olive takes on this honoured position, from outgoing National President, Richard Lavery, St. Agnes' Musical Society. In his speech to all those present at the National AGM, Richard  thanked each and every one for their warmth, friendliness and friendship as he travelled all around Ireland over the past two years. Richard spoke of seeing over ninety shows with a cast varying from five people to one hundred and fifty people in local halls, schools, theatres, and enjoyed every minute of this experience. In all he added over 30,000 miles on to his car and as he steps down from this position, his car will miss the journeys also.

He paid tribute to all his fellow officers on the National Executive and National Council, saying "they are a great bunch of people", who work tirelessly throughout the year ensuring all the activities of AIMS are carried out in a very professional manner.  Some of the many highlights Richard remarked on were: his trip to Sweden with Rush Musical Society, who staged "Mack & Mabel", where he spoke to a woman who runs over 600 theatres in Sweden, none of which are amateur, telling them about AIMS and how we run shows here in Ireland, something which amazed the Swedes and are looking into perhaps a twinning with AIMS in the not too distant future. The Lily Mae Charity Single, which almost piped the winners of X Factor coming up to Christmas last year was another project Richard said he was proud to be associated with.

Looking to the future Richard mentioned the many projects AIMS are planning, to celebrate 50 years of amateur musical theatre here in Ireland in 2015 - a Charity Single later this year, an Album featuring 1000 voices in 2015, Ruby Ball on Saturday January 5, 2015, in The Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, National 50th Anniversary Concert in The Board Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin, on Sunday October 25, 2015, an much more, so watch this space for more details.

In handing over the chain of office to Olive, Richard had these words of advice, "check your schedule, time and date of shows, and not arrive a day early, and above all explore all the wonderful towns and villages around Ireland".
